A little history to whet your thirst...

Crompton and Company developed the first electric kettles in England way back in 1891. The earliest examples all had the element in a separate chamber underneath similar to traditional vessels that boiled water and had the fire underneath the pot.
In 1922, The Swan Company developed one which had the element sealed in a metal tube and placed directly in the water chamber unlike the slow boiling electric jugs produced up to then. This faster design became popular amongst British tea drinkers and soon most companies were making metal kettles in this design. However in the late 1930s bakelite handles and lids gained popularity and during the Second World War several ceramic designs that featured bakelite lids were produced due to the shortage of metals. These remained popular for a long time. Then in1956 Russell Hobbs produced the first fully automatic tea kettle.
